Oddballs
Palm Island Lodge / Camp. Accommodation
in camp is provided in 3-man dome tents set on shaded, elevated wooden
decks which provide a sweeping view of the area and any game that
might come venturing near to camp. Each tent is equipped with
mattresses, linen, duvets, pillows, towels and a small solar powered
light. There are shared ablution facilities with showers and plenty of
hot water. The bar and lounge area has comfortable chairs and a raised viewing deck, that overlooks the delta and is the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful sunsets. Hippos often play in the channel, and other wildlife, particularly elephant, are often to be seen. The bar serves a wide range of soft drinks, beers, ciders, wines and spirits.
No
motorised activities are offered at Oddballs, only guided game walks
and mekoro excursions. A mokoro (pl. mekoro) is a dug-out canoe,
traditional water-craft of the Okavango. A mokoro accommodates
two guests and the poler, who is also the guide who will remain
your guide for the duration of your stay. This is wonderful
as it enables guests to get to know their guide and his culture.
All the guides at Oddballs are born and bred in the Okavango,
and many have worked there for 20 years or more, and over several
generations. They are very experienced and skilled, and your
experience will depend to a large extent on the relationship you
strike up with your guide. Excursions usually start by mokoro, after
which you will walk on some of the larger islands in the area. Walking
will be an integral and significant part of your experience at any
time of year, although the extent of your walks will depend on your
tastes. Guests usually go out in the early morning, having a late
breakfast on their return, and again in the afternoon after the midday
heat has dissipated, but some elect to go out for the whole day with a
packed picnic lunch. Oddballs’
reputation is based largely on their Mokoro Trails into the further
reaches of the delta. All equipment and provisions are packed into
your mokoro as you set off with your guide for an unforgettable
wilderness experience. Your
trail will take you along winding channels lined with reeds, into the
Moremi Game Reserve, an area renowned for its diverse bird and animal
life. Two to three nights
camping on the Mokoro Trail is the norm, but trails for up to a week
or more are regularly conducted. Guests are however required to spend
their first and last nights at Oddballs itself. Camping in the bush is
a unique way to experience the Okavango, and is something that one
will probably remember for the rest of one’s life. There are no
facilities outside of Oddballs, and guests will be thoroughly briefed
prior to their departure as to what to expect on trail. In addition to having the opportunity to see the more
well-known animals such as elephant, buffalo, antelope, lion and
leopard guests will also have many chances to delve into the
intricacies of the environment. One can learn about the construction
of termite mounds, local uses for the indigenous flora and many tales
of how the animals and birds came to be so weird and wonderful. All
the camping and cooking equipment one needs is provided, as well as
all food. Guests need to bring their own sleeping bags and torch for
the Mokoro Trail. The area has abundant game. However, game-viewing is of course very much a matter of luck, but elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile and hippopotamus are regularly encountered. Cape Hunting Dogs move through the area from time to time, and one can occasionally see cheetah. In addition to these potentially dangerous animals there is a host of herbivores – giraffe, the usual antelope and some endemic species such as tsessebe, red lechwe and sitatunga - and smaller carnivores, such as spotted hyaena, jackals, wild cats, mongooses, honey-badgers and the like. No firearms are carried and guides relying rather on caution, vigilance, experience and an understanding of animal behaviour to deal with the situations that arise.
