Oddballs News: Best water levels at Oddballs since 1984...
18 September 2008. by Peter Sandenberg.
Flowers! In unbelievable profusion – in my house at night it sounds like rain, the incessant falling of billions of tiny flowers. All the acacias, the Garcinia, the Combretums, the Kigelias....and the summer species haven’t started yet. Too beautiful. After several weeks of thick and entirely typical haze from widespread fires the air has cleared considerably. The water is slowly subsiding with the winter cold, and we are entering that extraordinary time which is technically spring but here is more of an ending than a beginning. The first few bird species have arrived and the build-up to the first rains has started.Game-wise, an interesting time with a breeding herd of elephant on the island and in Delta Camp, sometimes for several hours. There are maybe 60 of them, and we were nervous when they arrived but they seem quite comfortable with us. Some are very young indeed and it is wonderful to have them around, little trunks up and testing the air constantly. When they set off it’s in single file, tip to tail. Baby giraffe too, enchanting the walkers, and of course many babies to come of all sorts. A pack of 7 wild dogs a few days ago, but no sign of them since so we don’t know if they were just passing. Hopefully they will colonise their old den on Baobab Island again, which is within easy walking distance of the camps. The lion are back at last.

Green Pepper Travel offers Special rates for Oddballs Camp

Oddballs became one of the first camps to be established in the Okavango Delta in 1984 and since then guests have been able to share the unique scenery, wildlife and atmosphere of this fascinating area.

Situated on the south-western edge of Chief’s Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta Oddballs is accessible by light aircraft only - from Maun a scenic 20-minute hop over the dry outskirts of the town and then into the lush green landscape of islands, channels and floodplains where the camp is situated.  This flight over the Okavango Delta is something wonderful to behold.

On landing you will be met at the airstrip by the staff of Oddballs and welcomed to the island. Once in camp you will be comprehensively briefed on what to expect from, and how to react to, the wildlife you might encounter on your adventures in the Delta.

The area has abundant game. However, game-viewing is of course very much a matter of luck, but elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile and hippopotamus are regularly encountered. Cape Hunting Dogs move through the area from time to time, and one can occasionally see cheetah. In addition to these potentially dangerous animals there is a host of herbivores – giraffe, the usual antelope and some endemic species such as tsessebe, red lechwe and sitatunga - and smaller carnivores, such as spotted hyaena, jackals, wild cats, mongooses, honey-badgers and the like. No firearms are carried and guides relying rather on caution, vigilance, experience and an understanding of animal behaviour to deal with the situations that arise.

Hi Jody,
I just wanted to write and say thank you for organising such an incredible
trip for Emily and me.  We had an incredible time.  The whole trip was
fantastic but the highlight for me was probably camping in the Okavango
Delta.  Oddballs camp was exceptional - especially the staff and guides -
such a personal service.  Every single transfer and flight was on time to
the minute and we had a very stressfree time despite not really knowing
what we were doing next - sensational.
